【Habits protect Habitats】Choosing sustainable seafood for the future of humans and oceans
Over 90% of the global fish stocks are facing a critical crisis, and the recovery of resources is far lagging behind the speed of exploitation. Eventually, seafood choices for all of us will become fewer and fewer. WWF-Hong Kong encourages the public to choose sustainable seafood for healthy oceans and a long-lasting seafood supply.
Wild-caught or farmed seafood that can meet our dietary needs without compromising the health of marine ecosystems for future generations is considered sustainable.
WWF’s Seafood Guide lists over 70 common seafood items and classified them into three categories, namely “Green – First Choice”, “Yellow – Second Choice”, and “Red – Avoid”. When buying seafood, you can look for the species, origin and production method on the packaging and opt for “Green – First Choice” or “Yellow – Second Choice” products. You can also purchase sustainable seafood products with the WWF-Hong Kong’s Sustainable Seafood Badge.
As the world puts more emphasis on seafood sustainability, there are more choices of sustainable seafood with affordable prices on the market. In addition, seafood has a lower carbon footprint than meat, making it a smart choice on any occasion.
