PARKnSHOP embraces the 4Rs operational mindset to play our part in promoting a circular economy: reduce, replace, reuse, and recycle.
PARKnSHOP is committed to reducing food waste and has implemented rigorous internal procedures to minimise waste at its source. Our Shrinkage Group works diligently to accurately forecast demand and carries out end-of-day and close-to-expiry clearance sales, effectively reducing waste while providing benefits to our customers.
Since 2012, PARKnSHOP has been a pioneer among Hong Kong supermarkets in donating edible surplus food. As of 2023, we have donated more than 3,900 tonnes of food, which has enabled Food Angel to create over 12 million meal boxes to support those in need.
Non-edible food waste is either repurposed through local composting or used as animal feed, or diverted away from landfills to be processed at organic waste treatment facilities like O • Park. Currently, we have 16 stores and 1 warehouse that send food waste to O • Park.
In our warehouses, we are taking several measures to divert waste from landfills, including:
- Reducing the usage of stretch film
- Implementing paperless picking through automation
- Recycling batteries from forklifts
- Recycling plastic waste
As of 2022, we successfully diverted 77% of our operational waste away from landfills.
